Walk for Water: Aveda Institutes Florida Participates in Worldwide Effort

May 18th, 2009

Earth Month is over and, as usual, we went into high gear holding events and raising money for global and local projects. Aveda has held Earth Month since 1990 and has raised over $11 million.
Here in Florida, all four Aveda Institutes raised money and participated in “Walk for Clean Water.” The international event is a 6-kilometer (4-mile) charity walk, and the distance isn’t chosen randomly. That’s the average distance women walk in developing countries every day just to find clean water.

The Turnout was great at all of the walks and the money  raised will be used for both local and international campaigns. Make sure to check out our event photos below.

Meanwhile, there are things everyone can do to conserve clean water in our own neighborhoods. Here are some tips:

  • Use less water in your home and yard to prevent wastewater and pollution from runoff. Sweep driveways and sidewalks, rather than hosing them down.
  • Use pesticides sparingly—if at all—and compost leaves and yard clippings for use as natural fertilizer in your garden or yard.
  • Pick up pet waste, trash and other debris in your neighborhood and properly dispose of it; street gutters and storm drains often run directly into lakes, streams, rivers and wetlands.
  • Keep your car clean and green. Choose a professional car wash that recycles its water; promptly repair auto leaks; and recycle used motor oil—a single quart that seeps into groundwater can pollute 250,000 gallons of drinking water.
  • Properly recycle electronics, appliances, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), silver batteries and paint to keep toxic pollutants out of your water.

New Classes for Aveda Education

May 18th, 2009

Whether you’re attending an Aveda Institute, new to the beauty business or an experienced veteran, you’re always still learning.

That’s why the institutes offer advanced education classes – because everyone is a student, no matter how experienced.

The calendar was just released for Fall 2009, with registration starting June 1 at 10 a.m. EST. The first class starts June 20.

These classes are for salon professionals who want to improve the skills they’re already putting to use or expand their skill set into new areas. Aveda Salons can even redeem their Concept Benefit Points to send employees to classes.

Some of these classes were available in the first half of the year, for those that missed them the first time. Most, though, are sparkling brand new. As always, the instructors are prestigious and the classes sound awesome.

For you hair color people, one of the huge classes this season will be Colour Magic at Aveda Institute Orlando featuring Aveda Concept Salon owner Lupe Voss. This two-day class (August 30-31) is from the acclaimed folks at redCHOCOLATE (redCHOC.com) and will teach some of the amazing things being done with color mixing. If you want to learn how to make your hair color services richer, more vibrant and longer-lasting, this one is a can’t-miss.

If you’re more of the spa/relaxation type, the Foot Reflexology class by Marc Zollicoffer might be more your speed. This two-day massage class (June 21-22) at the Orlando Institute will teach over 30 pressure points and their connection to different aspects of the human body. It will also show you how to customize a foot massage, so that customers will only go one place to get it – your salon/spa.

Of course, there are tons of other classes, so check out the schedule and sign up for the ones you like best. And make it snappy, because they fill up quickly.

Recession-Proof Your Career

May 18th, 2009

Thinking about working in a beauty-related field? You’re a smart one.

Recently released statistics show that professionals in the beauty industry (beauticians, cosmetologists, etc.) are in a “recession-proof” field. In fact, the field is expanding despite the recession.

This refreshing article (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/education/story/959351.html) from the Miami Herald says the field will grow by 14% between 2006 and 2016, well above the average for all occupations in the U.S. Some of the specific professions expect an amazing 34% increase in employment over that span. The demand is clearly out there.
There are dozens of reasons why beauty professions are recession-proof, but here are some of our favorites:

  • People want to feel good – In this recession, a lot of people are cutting back, but not at the salon. Rather than spending $500 on a dress or $30,000 on a car, people go for the immediate result of looking and feeling better at the salon for a lot less money.
  • It’s a great place to work – People love working in this industry. The pay is good (average for an Aveda stylist in their third year is $48,000/year), the work is fun and challenging, the people are great and there are plenty of advancement opportunities. Plus the salons themselves are always looking for great new talent, so there are always jobs available. Seriously, what’s not to love about this industry?
  • The Internet works for the industry – Unlike our friends at the Herald, the Internet and other technology are the beauty industry’s best friends. Finding a salon, booking an appointment and getting exactly what you want are easily available without leaving the house or even picking up the phone.
