Aveda: A Trendsetter for Earth-Friendliness

June 1st, 2009

Most people know that Aveda is about as Earth-friendly as it gets. What most don’t really know, though, is how and why Aveda is so environmentally conscious.

Well it’s not just because “green” is in right now. Aveda always thought environmentally friendly and sexy could go together, even over 30 years ago when the company got started.

Here are some of the ways Aveda is good to the environment:

  • Using organic products whenever possible. Aveda is one of the largest purchasers of organic ingredients in the personal care industry
  • Using recycled materials in packaging and minimizing waste
  • Using ingredients from sustainable resources – including fair-trade arrangements that support indigenous communities and struggling economies
  • No animal testing – ever
  • Running the industry’s first and only manufacturing plant completely on clean, renewable wind power
  • Supporting other earth-friendly causes including renewable energy, clean-water initiatives and pollution reduction

So why does Aveda do it? In short, because it’s a good thing to do. It’s responsible, it’s smart, and if maintained, the efforts are sure to be noticed. The fact that just about every other company in the country is following suit proves it.

What this all boils down to is another way Aveda products make people feel good. Not only do users of Aveda products look and feel better, they also get a little peace of mind.

I’ll let Dominique Conseil, Aveda’s President, sum it all up:

It does not qualify as beauty if it hurts any of the diverse life forms that the best beauty artist of all, Nature, created. Authentic beauty cares for the environment which we inherited from elders and will leave to generations that follow us. Beauty cares for the society in which we live, enhancing harmony in the way we live and interact with one another as human beings. In order to be beauty, it also needs to be good. Beauty is the result, but also the process followed in pursuing that result.”
