Aveda’s “12 Points of Difference”

October 30th, 2009

Dare to be Different!

Aveda strives to be different, and we’re proud of it.   Our “12 Points of Difference” philosophy is used to set Aveda apart from industry norm.  It begins with the products we make and use, to the way we serve our guests.   We introduce them on day one of class and continue to do so until graduation.

 ”12 Points of Difference”

  1. Upon entering the salon, the guest is greeted by front desk staff and offered Aveda Comforting Tea or water.
  2. Ensure that the guest has been pre-booked or re-booked from their last visit.
  3. Stylist is informed guest has arrived; stylist meets and greets the guest, escorts to station and guest changes into cape/smock.
  4. Stylist discusses guests’ needs with a dry hair consultation.
  5. A portfolio is included in the consultation and confirms the desired look.  This is a major point of difference that creates value and fashion for the client.
  6. Stylist conducts a Stress Relieving Ritual.
  7. The guest is then escorted to the shampoo area for a relaxing shampoo and conditioning of the hair.
  8. On completion of hair cut service, the stylist completes 90% of the finish and teaches the guest how to duplicate the look at home.  At the same time, introducing the products they used to style and finish the hair.
  9. The stylist conducts a quick makeup touch-up, which is designed to brush off the hair and complete a highly fashionable look.
  10. The guest is escorted to the product shelves where the stylist simply picks up the products they used throughout the service and places them into a basket.
  11. The stylist informs the guest and front desk of the appropriate number of weeks necessary to maintain their look.
  12. The front desk closes the sale and re-books the next appointment.

These “Points of Difference” travel with us as a life-long skill in exceeding guest expectations and creating an excellence in customer service and delivery.

Do Aveda salons only hire Aveda Institutes graduates?

October 30th, 2009

To answer this question, we went directly to the source by asking Aveda trained professionals and salon owners, Mark-Gerard & Kenneth of Mission AVEDA, located in St. Petersburg, Florida. Their response:

“Aveda salons do not always hire Aveda graduates. It is preferred, but generally salons are willing to train or send the stylist to advanced classes. However, practicing the 12 points of difference is high on our list of prerequisites. Hiring an Aveda graduate gives both the salon owner and the stylist/spa therapist an advantage because they all talk the same language and understand each other from the beginning. When a student makes their way to a salon, they quickly realize how important practicing the 12 Points of difference is and how quickly they can advance their careers. Hiring a stylist/ spa therapist who has not been educated in the Aveda 12 points of difference requires a great amount of re-training and practice to get the stylist/ spa therapist on board.”

So while you don’t need to be an Aveda Institute graduate in order to work in an Aveda salon or spa, you’ll be further in your career should you choose to work with Aveda if your beauty education is rooted in the Aveda fundamentals.
