Flashes of Inspiration

June 2nd, 2010

Aveda Institute St. Petersburg is honored to have been a part of the Flashes of Hope event that recently took place at All Children’s Hospital.  Flashes of Hope is a non-profit organization that changes the way children with cancer see themselves through the gift of photography and raises money for pediatric cancer research.  A select-few cosmetology students, and educators, assisted with the photo shoot, providing hair styles and makeup to family members and patients.   We are grateful and privileged to be a part of such a moving experience.  Included are some of the photos from the event.

Meet Our Latest Scholarship Winners

May 24th, 2010

Each year the Aveda Institutes Florida awards a scholarship to one lucky contestant, per institute, who exhibits exceptional skills in the field of cosmetology.  The scholarship entails a one year, fully paid, tuition to attend either of our four beauty schools in Florida.  This year, our contestants competed at the Aveda Institute Orlando in a true fashion show-style competition, runway and all.  They transformed a model and were judged on not only their creativity, but their exceptional execution and technique.   A special “thanks” goes out to our judges, Carl Dunn – CEO Pagentry Magazine; Aixa Diaz – News Anchor WESH Ch. 4; Megan Clementi – Miss Florida USA 2010 and Josh Perez – Production Manager Full Sail University.

Winners were:  Amy Starks, Aveda Institute Orlando; Jordan Ortega, Aveda Institute South Florida; Arielle Lavasseur, Aveda Institute St. Petersburg and Orphelia Patterson, Aveda Institute Tallahassee.

Be sure to stop by either one of these cosmetology schools to witness their talent first hand.

And They Call Us a Beauty School

May 22nd, 2010

While we are proud of our title as a Beauty School, or Cosmetology School, whichever you prefer,  we really are so much more than just another Beauty School in Florida.  Our schools continue to participate in the Matter of Trust program in which hair is turned into mats and booms used for absorbing oil.  Yes, that would include the massive oil spill that is polluting our beautiful Gulf of Mexico and will inevitably stain the Florida shoreline.  To date, Aveda Institute St. Petersburg has sent seven boxes of hair to the organization and three from Aveda Institute Orlando.  Aveda Institute Tallahassee has two boxes packed and ready for shipping and Aveda Institute South Florida has two 50-gallon trash bags collected to date…that’s a lot of hair!! Thank you to our wonderful team, and guests, for supporting these efforts and the world we live in!

Hair Soaks Up Oil Spill

Who would have ever thought a beauty school, and a simple haircut, could help with an oil spill? Certainly not us, but it’s a fact!  In light of the recent Gulf Oil Spill, Aveda Institutes Florida, consisting of four cosmetology schools in Florida, is collecting the hair from client haircuts, and donating it to the wonderful organization, Matter of Trust.  Matter of Trust uses the donated hair to make hair mats and hair booms to absorb oil.  As the oil from the Gulf threatens our shorelines, these mats/booms will assist with the daunting effort to clean up the oil.
