The results from our Earth Month initiatives are in, and we couldn’t be more proud of what the Aveda community has achieved. Earth Month 2010 was a fantastic success in making a difference for clean water initiatives, worldwide. We raised more than $3.5 million for global and local projects!

 Although one in seven people lacks access to clean water, inspiring leaders worldwide are, through the Global Greengrants-Aveda partnership, taking action to protect and improve water quality and access in their own communities.

One Goal, Many Solutions

The Global Greengrants Fund understands that defending and improving access to the world’s most precious resource takes many forms. Practicing sustainable agriculture keeps toxic pesticides out of water tables. Planting trees keeps water tables replenished and clean. In short, providing communities with grants to protect their water resources is the most sustainable, effective strategy to ensure that clean water is a right and a reality, not a privilege.

 Lighting the Way to Clean Water

Over the last four years, Aveda has made a remarkable commitment to protecting clean water and water rights through the limited edition Light the Way™ candle. 100% of the sales price goes to support communities and clean water projects in the countries where Aveda sources their ingredients.

 Impact of Earth Month: Over 3.5 Million Raised*

• 500 watersheds protected
• 2,700 women trained in environmental and watershed management
• 50,000 acres converted to sustainable, organic agriculture
• 275 communities taking action against toxic industrial pollution
• 4,000 people benefitting from wells and water infrastructure

While we are proud of our title as a Beauty School, or Cosmetology School, whichever you prefer,  we really are so much more than just another Beauty School in Florida.  Our schools continue to participate in the Matter of Trust program in which hair is turned into mats and booms used for absorbing oil.  Yes, that would include the massive oil spill that is polluting our beautiful Gulf of Mexico and will inevitably stain the Florida shoreline.  To date, Aveda Institute St. Petersburg has sent seven boxes of hair to the organization and three from Aveda Institute Orlando.  Aveda Institute Tallahassee has two boxes packed and ready for shipping and Aveda Institute South Florida has two 50-gallon trash bags collected to date…that’s a lot of hair!! Thank you to our wonderful team, and guests, for supporting these efforts and the world we live in!

Who would have ever thought a beauty school, and a simple haircut, could help with an oil spill? Certainly not us, but it’s a fact!  In light of the recent Gulf Oil Spill, Aveda Institutes Florida, consisting of four cosmetology schools in Florida, is collecting the hair from client haircuts, and donating it to the wonderful organization, Matter of Trust.  Matter of Trust uses the donated hair to make hair mats and hair booms to absorb oil.  As the oil from the Gulf threatens our shorelines, these mats/booms will assist with the daunting effort to clean up the oil.

The wonderful team at the Aveda Institute Tallahassee works hard to make a difference in their community providing services and assistance to a number of groups in need.  Ladies from the Chelsea House, a transition home for homeless women, recieved the royal treatment  Christmas Eve, and many had the time of their lives.  They received manicures, shoulder massages, hair and makeup applications from the Aveda Institute.  Dressed in their best attire, they boarded a limousine and cruised neighborhoods in search of the best holiday light display in town.  In addition to the Aveda Institute, various businesses, including Mikes Limousine, Walmart, Starbucks, The Cake Shop, Peterbrooke Chocolatier, Winn-Dixie and realtor, Sandra Purvis, donated food, transportation, and money in support of the event.

Thank you everyone for helping the Aveda Institutes Florida raise $20,000 for the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation during the month of October.  The Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder.  Since 2004, Aveda has contributed $1.2 million!
